Music Theory & Music Technology Tutor

Mark Edwards is a musician, producer, recording engineer and music-technology specialist with more than 30 years of professional experience across classical music, film, television and broadcast production.

A graduate of the University of Surrey’s renowned Tonmeister programme, Mark holds a BMus in Music and Sound Recording. His career has included work with organisations such as the BBC, ABC, SBS, Discovery Channel, Warner Bros., Fremantle and Universal Pictures, as well as recordings involving the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, Canberra Symphony Orchestra, Pinchgut Opera, Trinity College Choir and the Janáček Philharmonic.

As a pianist and piano tuner, Mark approaches music theory as a practical musical language rather than a collection of rules to be memorised. His tuition can encompass notation, scales and keys, intervals, harmony, rhythm, musical form, score reading, analysis and aural understanding, always connecting theoretical ideas with music that can be heard and performed.

In music technology, Mark draws upon extensive real-world production experience. Subjects may include microphones and recording technique, acoustics, signal flow, digital audio, MIDI, DAWs, editing, mixing, mastering and the technical foundations of modern audio systems.

Mark’s teaching aims to make complex ideas clear, logical and musically useful. Lessons are tailored to each student’s existing knowledge, interests and goals—whether they are studying theory, developing recording skills, preparing for further education or seeking a deeper understanding of how music and technology work together.
